During the 2013-2014 academic year, the Shale Public Finance project examined the fiscal effects of increased oil and gas development for local governments in ten oil- and gas-producing regions in eight states. We held an expert workshop in May of 2014 and have published two reports detailing our findings, with more under preparation.
Building upon this work, and with the continued support of the Alfred P. Sloan Foundation, Energy Initiative Director Richard Newell and Associate in Research Daniel Raimi will conduct a second phase of the project. This phase will examine eight additional states, which means our research will have covered every major oil- and gas-producing state including Alaska.
Raimi is now traveling to more than a dozen additional oil- and gas-producing regions (see map below). We will update this page with his posts from each region, which will include information on drilling and production levels, along with some of the interesting local government issues, trends and experiences that we see along the way.

- January 5-9: Permian and San Juan basins, New Mexico
- February 23-27: Los Angeles basin and Kern County region, California
- March 16-20: Western and southern Kansas
- April 6-10: Marcellus and Utica shales, Ohio and West Virginia
- April 27-May 1: Uintah basin, Utah
- June 1-5: Kenai Peninsula and North Slope, Alaska
