An increase in visitors to some of the nation’s most popular parks—such as Yellowstone, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon—has led to a number of problems for park management: traffic congestion, air pollution, and even discarded toilet paper. RFF’s Margaret Walls, in a new article for Resources magazine, notes: “The Park Service may be a victim of its own success.” She suggests that “the Park Service should seriously be considering a more efficient approach” to managing overcrowding: a new fee structure that would incentivize the public to visit different parks at different times of the year.
